After decompression sickness, Jalani gains independence with electrified Gift of Mobility

From Global Village Foundation:

Jalani is 42 years old. He lives in a small fishing village in North West Bali. As a young man he worked as a fisherman.
In 2007, at 24 years of age He took a job as a deep-water diver to earn extra money collecting ornamental fish for sales on to Aquarium wholesalers.

Despite very limited diving experience he found himself on one dive at a depth of 100 meters. He had been underwater for 2 hours connected by hose to a compressor above when his body began trembling, and confusion set in. He got scared and headed straight to the surface. At the surface his body was numb. His friends on the boat above rushed him to the shore. He, nor his friends understood at the time the seriousness of his condition.
As a result of that disastrous day, Jailani had no feeling at all in his lower body for 14 years. He was totally bedridden, and suffered most of those years with severe bed sores. His new young wife left him within days of his accident.
He has been lucky that his brother & sister-in-law have cared so well for him since.
In 2021 he began to get a little feeling back into his legs, but has struggled since to teach himself to walk again.
In February of this year the GVF team provided Jalani with a hand powered Mobility Cart.

Much as it helped him to get around near to his home, he still didn’t have the physical strength to travel far.
On the eve of Christmas the GVF returned to Jalani’s village in North West Bali & presented him with a (specially adapted by the GVF Wheelchair workshop team) electric powered Mobility Cart
Now he is really moving!! He says his independence has been restored. He says he can again go to the beach (1500 meters away) to catch fish, which he’ll be able to sell.
He was smiling, ‘ear to ear’ happy as he received his new Electric cart, so happy he has again the chance to earn some income fishing.
Please enjoy this short video of the day.
The Global Village team wish Jalani the very best of luck as he continues on his long road of recovery.
We say a very special Christmas thank you to all our friends at Mobility Worldwide in the United States who have entrusted the Global Village Foundation to be their distribution partner in Indonesia since 2019.
And again, we say thank you so very much to our wonderful supporters around the World at this special time of year, for your kindness & continued support of the Global Village Foundation’s work, helping those with severe disabilities throughout Bali & other islands of Indonesia to live happier, healthier, more fulfilling lives.
Footnote:
Deep water diving accidents are common in Indonesia (especially in the islands surrounding Madura in East Java, & the islands east of Bali) often resulting in local divers being crippled by decompression sickness. These accidents occur because impoverished young men are often employed as divers to ‘work’ the seafloor. They receive no formal training, poor pay, and are provided with the most primitive of diving equipment (a 50-100 meter long hose pipe feeding them compressed air from a standard compressor mounted on a small outrigger boat above them).
Global Village Foundation have provided wheelchairs & mobility aids to countless young men over the years crippled by the bends from diving accidents.
